Male factor infertility accounts for about 20% of infertility and a semen analysis is a comprehensive way to assess the sperm and to find out the problem related with difficulty conceiving. Traditionally, it has been seen, female partner was referred to visit the gynecologist for an evaluation. However, male factor involvement in pregnancy is just important as to women’s reproductive health.
A male partner is asked to give a semen analysis at a fertility clinic or at home and if the report comes out as abnormal, couples are often shuttled straight to assisted reproduction for IUI or IVF and the infertility issue bypassed. At our IVF centre in Delhi, our team of embryologist assesses a sperm sample according to the standards defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The semen analysis is considered the single most important test to check male fertility. The basic factors reported in the semen analysis include: Volume of the sample in millilitres
Who can benefit from a private semen analysis? Any man who have been trying to conceive for more than a year and is not aware of the reasons about his fertility concerns. Certain drugs can have an impact on the production of sperm but it should be discussed with the fertility doctor. Besides that, it is important to figure out the problem that is causing obstacles in achieving pregnancy in your female partner. So, it is also essential your female partner should also go for a fertility evaluation at the fertility clinic or at any IVF centre in India. What to do before going for semen analysis The man should abstain from sex or ejaculation between three to five days before providing the sperm for analysis so as to ensure the outcome is optimal and accurate. Ideally, the sample should be produced at Dr. Rita Bakshi’s fertility clinic in Delhi or kept at a constant body temperature and delivered to our centre within one hour. The sample is examined by our laboratory staff and tested according to the WHO protocol and Kruger criteria within one hour of providing the sample, during a consultation with a senior embryologist, the man will be given the results of the analysis and a comparison with the WHO criteria for a ‘normal’ semen analysis. The couple will also be given the advice whether natural pregnancy or alternatively fertility treatment such as IVF or ICSI is recommended. After the test is complete, he will be given a copy of the laboratory report. How long does the test take? It only takes just one to two hours for the single appointment to provide the sample of the sperm, the laboratory analysis of the sample and the follow-up appointment with a member of the laboratory team for the results. We request our patients that our initial online consultation is not formal clinical consultation. The doctor will not ask you past medical history. Dr. Rita Bakshi, who heads India’s largest IVF centre in Delhi in a latest interview to various media outlets call upon a pregnant women with dengue to be immediately rushed to hospital and seek the treatment to suppress its symptoms.
The risks associated with dengue may go up if pregnant women and newborn babies contract the disease. The new concern among gynaecologists is the rise of miscarriages among pregnant women who are suffering from dengue. Pregnant women are more likely to develop a severe form of the disease because their immune system is suppressed during pregnancy. If someone has contracted dengue during pregnancy, they should be rushed to hospital as soon as possible. There is a greater risk of complications such as pre-eclampsia, pre-term labour and having a low birth weight baby. The interview has been published in leading media outlets including India Today, Mail Today and Yahoo India. Dengue causes a drop in platelet levels. Hence, women who go into labour while having dengue are at an increased risk of heavy bleeding (haemorrhage), and extra blood should be kept ready in case transfusion is needed. There’s no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment currently available for dengue. The main form of treatment is to suppress the symptoms. Symptoms can usually be managed by taking paracetamol which is considered to be safe during pregnancy. Drinking plenty of fluids and resting can also help. Pregnant women may need to be monitored closely by their doctors. People with severe dengue need to be treated in hospital and given fluids via a drip to prevent dehydration and stabilise blood pressure. If a pregnant woman has dengue at the time of giving birth, her newborn baby may also develop the disease during the first two weeks of life. Doctors claim that dengue in newborns can be extremely difficult to detect. If a baby has high fever, is irritated and fussy, sleepy or refusing to eat and has a rash, chances are high that it’s dengue. Those who are undergoing fertility treatment may also face difficulties if they contract the disease. Dengue may reduce the chances of success. It is recommended to postpone the fertility treatment cycles until the specialist recommends the woman to try again. Dr. Rita Bakshi, who runs an IVF clinic based in Delhi in a recent interview with Times of India correspondent Neha Bhayana, stated 25 percent of her patients have conceived with using natural IVF in comparison to 50 percent of those treated with typical IVF.
Comparing to Conventional IVF, natural IVF works within a woman's normal monthly cycle to collect the one egg her ovaries naturally release. The single resultant embryo is implanted in her uterus so there is no chance of multiple births. Natural IVF shows 'good' results than standard IVF. Times of India correspondent while conducting an interview with Dr. Rita Bakshi said, "Of my patients 25% who take natural route conceive compared to 50% cent of those treated with typical IVF.” The interview which was published in TOI’s Sunday edition on September 6 stated Dr. Rita Bakshi’s IVF clinic conducts natural IVF for around eight patients. According to the interview, patients also find natural IVF less stressful and more affordable than conventional IVF. "Even if it takes four attempts to get pregnant with natural IVF, the overall cost is less than if the woman underwent two rounds of the drug-intensive treatment," Dr. Rita told the reporter. Research published in the 2007 issue of Lancet found Mild IVF equally successful as standard IVF, with four out of ten women getting pregnant For the young and old lately, several infertility clinics in India have started offering natural IVF along with two other 'gentle' methods, modified natural IVF and mild IVF. These involve lower doses of drugs for a shorter duration compared to the standard procedure. Natural IVF is one of several available options and works perfectly even for older women. Women over 38 are recommended natural IVF as they often produce only two-three eggs even when given the "highest doses" of stimulant drugs. Our doctors also recommend natural IVF to patients who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) as they are at higher risk for hyperstimulation -- some producing as many as 50 eggs after injections. Most clinics don’t offer natural IVF despite its better results than standard IVF. The basic reason is that the procedure requires high maintenance from a skilled doctor and his staff needs to be available round the clock to retrieve the egg from a patient's ovaries as soon as it matures.
