Premature ovarian failure also known as primary ovarian insufficiency is a term used for the condition when a woman’s ovaries stop working before she turns 40 and have high FSH levels and low estrogen hormone levels.
Approximately 1 in every 1000 women between the ages of 15-29 and 1 in every 100 women between the ages of 30-39 are affected by premature ovarian failure (POF). Premature ovarian failure is sometimes referred to as premature menopause but with two different conditions. Women with premature ovarian failure usually have irregular periods for years and have chances of becoming pregnant while as woman with premature menopause stop having periods and cannot become pregnant. If your ovaries fail, they don’t produce normal levels of the hormone estrogen and the problems occur in the release of the eggs regularly. Women with POF do not ovulate /release an egg each month. This loss of function is occurred due to a less than normal amount of follicles or a dysfunction in the ovaries. Infertility is a common result. Causes of Premature Ovarian Failure Unfortunately, for most women the cause is unknown yet there are several known causes for premature ovarian failure.
The condition is primarily related to the loss of follicles and eggs in the ovaries. There is almost no treatment that can reverse that process. There is no way to make more eggs once they are gone.
